A blast from the past..

A couple of phots from taking for a spin last year and at Invasion Cochester 2013. What progress will be made for this years event?

A little update

It's been a while, witha lot of personal stuff - holidays, etc but it's now time to knuckle down and make progress ready for Invasion Colchester on 6th September.
The skins have been drilled and screwed onto the frame and considerably strengthens the frame. While these were on, I dabbled with the hinges - there is going to be several bits of frame to cut out to accomodate them. Improvise, adapt, overcome will ensure the frame retains the strength.
A look at the dome motor mount  has resulted in an idea, but will require raising the dome support ring as it will hit the dome wheel.

The holes and brackets to strengthen the shoulders have been done. And the top section will support the power feed for the dome.

The bread pans have been drilled and ready to screw to the frame, again these will require bits removed due to the hinges.

Just got to forget about the TV and go in the DMW every evening, but it feels like it won't be long now till it's done.

Strengthening & a brainwave

Styrene put in next to the bread pans. These will give the pans something to bolt on to, as well as strengthening that section of framework.

Also, drilled and tapped the shoulder hub cover type thing!!!!. The screws will be hidden by the shoulder hub, which would have to be removed to take off the shoulder hub cover.

THE BRAINWAVE --
Worked out how to fix the half moon and ankle cylinder - rare earth magnets. Just got to find them in the DMW!!!

But I need a sleep now that brainwave really took it out of me!!!

Toastie!!!!

A bit of heat generated in the DMW by brazing the
aluminum bread pans. Can you see the difference between the first go and the last one. Not too bad even if I do say so myself. And they fit in the gaps - Sometimes I amaze myself!!!!

Cor! Blimey! What a lovely pair.......of bread pans

Another good morning in the workshop.

The parts for the ankle cylinder were filed down to sit flush. A few ideas floating around in my head (lots of space) on how to fix but be removable. Also cut the parts to start the cylinder end caps.

Strips of styrene superglued to the side vents. A couple more then file to fit and sort out the backing.

The 2nd bread pan was cut out and bent to shape. This was a little thinner than the other which was intentional. It did mean removing a couple of uprights. But I have an idea on how to get round that, yet still securely fix the bread pans whilst retaining future removeability.

Seems weird getting R2 to a stage where he moves then taking it apart to finish and improve/strengthen it. Lots of bits to work out the fixings, then paint, then refix but I'll get there. .......eventually.

Yee-haa! up to date

After (hopefully) stopping the leaks on the motor, I decided to have a go at a cardboard template for the bread bins. Once this was done, I thought I'd start cutting it out of the aluminium sheet. Time was going well, so an improvised shee...See more

At last a whole day in the DMW, but the majority of it was sourcing and stopping a leak on 'The Donkey' and fitting an additional reversing light. Then it was time to look at how to fix the booster covers to the leg.
I had already ordered ...See more

Its been to long, but I have a good feeling about this year. Starting of with a bit of learning about programming the arduino. A proximity sensor program with leds and a buzzer as a too close warning. This meant playing about with the code to work at different distances and to buzz at less than 10cm. Quite chuffed with myself!

Halloween Video

A little video of R2-ST in his Halloween outfit with the music playing. Only snag is I think the amp drained the battery so it was a slow walk home!!!

And now the centre ankle had the ankle cylinders cut and the parts glued in position. Notice the signature from Mr R2-D2 himself.

Photo: And now the colour can be revealed. After trying Ford Purple Velvet metallic which turned out a tadge darker than we liked, it was back to the original colour I picked up in a diy store. Craig & Rose purple pearl. The only snag was it was waterbased and to thick for spraying. Out came the syringes to measure ratios and ta-da! 2:1 paint/water with a layer of plastikote clear high gloss results in this. SPOT ON a bit of work in between coats; it'll be better but as a splash of colour for Halloween it will do. What do you think of it?

While the centre foot is off. I thought it would be advantageous to give it a spray in Ford Diamond White. The hole is for the allen key ankle bolt, but I do plan on having something to cover it up. More later in the build - just to keep you watching.

A productive weekend in the DMW. The hole for the radar eye is cut out and filed to size. Bosh!

You thought I'd given up. Well tough luck! A little more progress in the way of the radar eye being bolted on. May even paint it to add a splash of colour.

Right enough dilly dallying. Lets get this blog up to date.
